We are the Youth and Student Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

If you want to create a UK which spends on public services, healthcare, eduction and environment rather than obsolete and potentially catastrophic weapons, join us.

WE WANT TO BUILD A MORE PEACEFUL WORLD

We believe that nuclear weapons are irrelevant, immoral, and a humanitarian disaster waiting to happen.

INVEST IN EDUCATION AND ENVIRONMENT

We want to see the billions of pounds poured into these illegal weapons better spent on education, environment, and public services.

BETTER OFF WITHOUT NUCLEAR WEAPONS

A more peaceful world is possible, where human need is prioritised over military spending. We will campaign until it becomes a reality.

Trident: the basics

At YSCND we campaign against Trident, the UK’s nuclear deterrent. But what is Trident, and why do we want to see the system dismantled?

WHAT IS TRIDENT?

Trident is the UK’s nuclear weapons system. It’s made up of 4 submarines, each with 8 missiles. The missiles can carry five warheads. These warheads are eight times as destructive as the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan.

TRIDENT IS EXPENSIVE

CND has calculated that replacing Trident will end up costing at least £205 billion. Cancelling Trident replacement would mean we could invest billions in the NHS, our education system or new homes.

TRIDENT IS DANGEROUS

The warheads on the Trident missiles are 100 kiloton designs. That’s the equivalent of 100,000 tonnes of TNT. By contrast, the warheads that killed around 140,000 people in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945 was just 14 kilotons.

TRIDENT IS ILLEGAL

Nuclear weapons have no legitimate purpose: their use would be illegal under almost every conceivable circumstance. Nuclear weapons are also banned by a UN Treaty, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
